St. Cecilia Concert Society: Symphony on the Shore

Barbara Butler writes:

I’m sure you have noted the ‘Symphony on the Shore’ Series which begins at St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg on Friday, October 3. This is a major undertaking for St. Cecilia Concert Society. It is our aim to secure a welcoming presence for our provincial orchestra that continues to serves local concert goers here on the south shore. I warmly encourage you to consider a season pass at $60 for a set of three concerts. Even if you can’t attend each concert, tickets make wonderful gifts for family and friends.

The three concerts are noted below as well as ticket information.

The St. Cecilia Concert Society celebrates its 20th anniversary this season. Besides a commitment to the presentation of first class chamber concerts, St. Cecilia is also committed to a strong outreach program. St. John’s Anglican Church is host to St. Cecilia’s Neighbours program (presenting concerts and events in neighbouring communities) and is gratefully supported by the St. John’s Arts Alliance.

THE CONCERTS

Season Opener

Friday, October 3, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Peter Allen, composer/piano
Bernhard Gueller, conductor

Symphony Nova Scotia's 25th anniversary season opens with a stirring tribute to the indomitable spirit of Nova Scotia. Composer Peter Allen performs his Hurricane Juan Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, commissioned by CBC to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Juan. The orchestra continues to celebrate triumph over adversity with Beethoven's powerful Symphony No. 7.

Bach and Albinoni

Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Jeanne Lamon, leader/violin
Tyler Duncan, bass-baritone
Suzanne Lemieux, oboe

Celebrated music director of Tafelmusik Jeanne Lamon returns to lead the orchestra in a magnificent baroque concert. Bass-baritone Tyler Duncan uses his "warm and versatile voice" to interpret Bach's moving Cantata No. 82. Suzanne Lemieux, Symphony Nova Scotia’s principal oboe, skilfully interprets Albinoni’s expressive Oboe Concerto, one of the earliest written for this instrument.

The Poetry of Light and Music

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 7:30 PM
Terence Mierau, tenor
Bernhard Gueller, conductor

Starting with Dvorák's melodic Wind Serenade, the orchestra then journeys through Britten's settings of Arthur Rimbaud poems with Maritime tenor Terence Mierau. Maestro Gueller describes these works as "full of fizzing, satirical edge, with melancholic and surreal images." Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 is the polished finale to a beautiful evening.
